While many volunteer opportunities only require your time, your patience, your compassion, and your willingness to work, some require a little more than that. If you want to volunteer to provide medical or tax-assistance service, for instance, you may be required to have experience, certifications, or even degrees in the field. If a volunteer opportunity involves transporting people, or is only open to people over 55, then you'll need to meet certain qualifications before volunteering in that capacity.
Note: For some sites, lacking a qualification will mean that you cannot view needs at all. In this case, if you try to view any needs, you'll be returned to your dashboard and will see the message, "You do not have qualification access to view needs." Once you have submitted the needed qualifications, you will be able to access and respond to the needs on the site.
If a need has requirements the must be met in order to volunteer, you'll see them in the Required Qualifications section on the need-information page.
If you have not submitted the required qualifications, you will see a a Not Qualified button when you attempt to respond to a need.
Your Connect site may ask qualification questions as part of the registration process. If you didn't provide qualification information then, you can always go to the qualifications area of your user profile and submit your qualifications there.
To submit qualifications from your user profile:
- From your profile menu dropdown, select Qualifications to access your My Qualifications page.
- Click Edit Qualifications.
- In the Edit Qualifications dialog box, answer the applicable qualification questions. You may be asked to type in an answer, select from a group of answers, or upload a file.
Note: If multiple qualification questions are listed, it's likely that not all will apply to the need. You can skip a question if it's not applicable and not required.
- Follow the instructions for the applicable qualification questions. If you upload a file, the Upload File button will be replaced with the name of your file.
Note: If included as part of a qualification question, the Expiration Date field is required. You will receive a notice when your qualification expires, and you'll be able to update your qualifications accordingly at that time.
- Click Submit Qualifications.
Once you have submitted your qualifications, they must be approved by a site manager. Your qualification will appear with a "pending" status in your My Qualifications area until it is approved. Once it is approved, it will have a status of Qualified. (If denied, you'll see Not Qualified in for the status.)
Updating Your Volunteer Qualifications
You can update your volunteer qualifications at any time by returning to the My Qualifications area of your user profile. Note that an updated qualification must go through the approval process again before it can become active.
